What the Conference is About
Alchemy speaks of transformation from one state to another through the symbolism of transmutation from lead to gold. This spiritualisation of matter is multi-dimensional, holographic and paradoxical. In physical terms this is the change of solid to liquid to gas so evocatively described in the symbolism of the alchemists laboratory as he/she ponders the magical processes within the retort. This is reflected today in the New Sciences where the modern day alchemists delve into the secrets of life from the human genome to the vastness of black holes in space. We can only wonder at what magical mysteries will reveal themselves in our time? Jung has said that the alchemists were the first psychologists, leaving us with a rich symbolic language for interpreting the entire psycho-spiritual development of the human being. This journey encompasses an evolutionary legacy that runs through the ages and finds us today with a field of transformational psychological tools to understand our dilemmas and facilitate personal growth.Alchemy’s goal or ‘Great Work’ was and is the Search for the Philosopher’s Stone - the elixir for all ills and that which makes us whole. The search for wholeness has been played out over the ages in the wealth of wisdom traditions, in the great world religions, and in the spiritual practices and teachings of all humanity. Today we see this search played out in the popular arts and on our cinema-screens with the fascination with magical themes and the fight between good and evil.
There is an abiding hunger in the human psyche for the Path of Return. The desire for Wholeness is ancient but ever-new. The future is not known, but many have gone before us showing us the way. A wealth of tools for deepening awareness have been developed and used to assist us in moving from the mundane to the spiritual, and to enable us to bring new-found awareness into daily life. This dynamic process affects each individual, our relationships, family structures, communities, nations, the kingdoms of nature and our planet as a Living Being. All traditions point to meditation, study and service. The ESCEF Conference enables a forum for the profound sharing of these techniques and their refinements to suit the evolving consciousness of today. We all seek meaning and a way forward. In these intense and challenging times there is heightened opportunity to seek Selfhood, to find the ‘gold’ within - the true Divine Alchemy.
There wilt never be made from Others that which thou seekest,
except there be made a thing of thyself. Gerald Dorn
